The Town of Greece water tower located on North Greece Road near Ridge Road on the site that would eventually become Elm Ridge Center plaza, 1980. The water tower was built in response to ongoing water shortage and water pressure issues on Ridge Road. In 1957, three college students were arrested after climbing the tower as a prank.
Stagecoach on Ridge Road, 1860's. Stagecoach travel along the narrow Ridge Road was a popular means in the early to mid 1800's. The road was often cluttered with cattle, pioneers, freight wagons and tourists. There were many popular inns along the way. The coach could typically hold twelve passengers, but more would be stacked wherever possible. It ran on the Sabbath, much to the dismay of some "Blue Law Rochesterians," who went on to form their own coach line called the Pioneer, which only ran on weekdays.

Town of Greece map, bicentennial edition, 1976. Greece had a population of 85,000 at the time and about 300 miles of roads covering almost 42 square miles.
A truck veered off Ridge Road on the morning of January 6, 1955 and crashed into the Greece Grange Hall. The truck was carrying 800 crates of apples when it side-swiped a vehicle before crashing into the building. There were no serious injuries. The driver of the truck, Paul Stauver, reported that the brakes failed and he was unable to control the vehicle.
Topps discount department store was founded in 1957 by Fred Beckerman. The first store opened in Connecticut and Rochester stores began appearing in the early 1960's. The second Rochester Topps location opened in April 1967 and was located at 1250 Ridge Road West; the current Home Depot plaza. Topps closed in 1974 and the site served as United Skates of America roller rink in the mid 1970's and 1980's before becoming Home Depot.
Mr. Steak was a restaurant chain started in Colorado in 1962 by James Mather. At its peak, it operated nearly three hundred locations nationwide. The Greece location opened in 1967 and was located at 2700 Ridge Road West, near the corner of North Glen Drive. John Kendall and Richard LeBaer operated the Greece location as well as a location on Monroe Avenue in Rochester. The Greece location closed in the mid 1980's and the chain folded in the 1990's.
The west side of Sibley's in the Greece Towne Mall. Ground broke on construction of the mall in March 1966. Sibley, Lindsay and Curr were the leading developers of the mall. The Sibley's store was two levels and 116,000 square feet. Sibley's was a Rochester based department store chain that was purchased in the mid 1980's by May Department Stores. The May Company moved the store to the former McCurdy's location in the Long Ridge Mall and changed the name was eventually changed to Kaufmann's in 1990 and then Macy's in 2006.

Old Edgemere Drive homes devastated by heavy April showers leading to extensive flooding and huge, rolling waves along Lake Ontario, April 1993. Greece Town Supervisor Roger Boily declared a local state of emergency to combat shore erosion and pond flooding.
Flooding along Edgemere Drive, 1952. Water levels were thirty inches above normal. Property owners along the shore blamed the use of Gut Dam, a Canadian installation in the St. Lawrence River, to control the water levels.

Eight hundred and fifty six of the lots were available for one dollar a week, no interest and no property taxes for the first two years.
